Dear Yogis,
Surrounded at the moment who are looking to blame the world or anything else for the situation they find themselves in, I thought I would remind you of a few “truths” as expounded by the Buddha. He taught that there is only one cause of suffering, and that is ATTACHMENT which could translate as “desire”. Desire is not just desiring after beautiful, it can be desiring after suffering – some people are so stuck they can’t see that their concentration on a bad outcome is continuing the bad outcome.. it is an attachment, a desire designed to make life difficult.
- The key to the first noble truth is to acknowledge and understand when we are suffering—when something feels troubling, problematical, unpleasant, or that we want to be different. Rather than resisting, avoiding, or clinging, we acknowledge and open to the truth of our experience. This does not mean wallowing in negativity to give our existence meaning, but recognising it contemplating what we can learn, and moving on.
- The key to the second noble truth is to recognize our own role in fueling our suffering. The Buddha taught that suffering has its origin in craving and clinging, such as being in an unskillful relationship with our experience. When we see clearly the price we pay for clinging, we can let go and experience the resulting freedom. The second noble truth—craving, as the cause of suffering—is to be abandoned. If something isn’t working for you, whatever it is, say thank-you for the lesson, and move on.
