Dear Yogis (and friends),

Just a reminder – the YOGA LUNCH happens tomorrow (Saturday 29th) at the Full Moon Saloon in Woodend at 12noon.  You are all welcome.  If you haven’t been before,  just drop me an email so I can be sure that our table is big enough.

A note about the decorative garden lighting I mentioned in our last newsletter.  Please change your globes!  You can get garden lighting that does not attract insects.

UPCYCLING:  I have finished work, I have work like the corset to the left now completed,  and I have work waiting….. however, if you are not in a hurry, I can take your favourite items to upcycle and re-imagine.  I dream sewing, and sit in bed in the morning with pad and pencil drawing the designs the universe has given me in dreams.  Maybe that us why people are coming to me – the universe is sending them.  Thank you clients, thank you universe.  Some decisions to be made here soon I guess – don’t worry, I am not changing my yoga studio into a sewing room (with a chandelier)  just yet.

As long as I get clients you are safe – once it becomes less than economical I will change – having 25% of the house empty, heating it and etc for yoga clients that are not regular, and come only once a week “when they can”,  is what I mean.  People for whom yoga has about the same pull as a coffee morning! By the way whatever happens, if I found a gorgeous light that was suitable for the yoga room I would buy it – I did buy a fabulous extra long solid ladder for the library shelves.  I have been prodding our local dealer for a year and a half to sell it to me at MY price.  Patience wins.

Dear Yogis,

Last evening on nightfall I was out walking (as one does),   it was warmer then than it was this morning actually, but what was “thrilling” was to see Venus hanging in the sky, the only visible planet and no stars, not one – it was other worldly, and I loved it.  It could have been a factor of light pollution. The estate I walked through (ShirleyPark) has Los Angeles style houses with glaring outside lights, garden lights, porch lights.  Any light that could have been switched on,  on was on, and the corner house had a light on the porch that could have been used on a basketball court.  It was huge and glaring.  We have invented motion sensors, but obviously no-one on the estate is interested.

HOW LIGHT POLLUTION IMPACTS THE INSECT WORLD:  The impacts vary between insect orders. Excess light makes it difficult for some species, like fireflies, that rely on bioluminescent cues to find mates. Some insects use polarized light to find bodies of water where they breed and reflections from outdoor fixtures confuse their sense of direction. For instance, in the USA they have found that mayflies, which only live and breed for a day, can be confused by light bouncing off asphalt and lay their eggs in the street instead of a lake or stream. A mistake like that can wipe out an entire population over night.

Insects are also attracted to the headlights of moving cars, with an estimate 100 billion meeting their end on the highway in Germany each summer, according to the study. Artificial light also interferes with the way some insects hunt at night.

Then there are the moths and other flying insects drawn to outdoor lights. It’s estimated about one third of the bugs swirling around those lights die by morning, either by being gobbled up by predators or simply from exhaustion.

The message here is to turn off your outside lights if they are not in use, or install sensors.  On lesser used roads we could install sensors as they do in Scandinavia and save money as well as energy.  I loved the fact in Sweden that lesser used street lights have sensors (they come on the you use the road)  and householders put LED lights in their windows, rather than light up the entire road.  I do it, and the other day at the BP Service Station they guy behind the counter had travelled up my street very early and noticed the light and said it made him feel safer.

Dear Yogis,

I have been working so hard to get commissions done on time that I didn’t realise til about lunch time on Friday that it WAS Friday and I hadn’t done the usual newsletter, and it was too late.  Apart from telling you I am busy, there is not much to report.

To the left are photos of the last oil I completed the restoration of on Friday last.  The time when i should have been doing the newsletter.  The photos were in natural light, so hard to get a good view, but you can see all the paint that was missing in the far left photo, and a near perfect painting in the other darker photo.

The latest work I completed yesterday was a well known Renaissance Print of the “Visitation of St.Anne” by Leonardo DaVinci.

There are many prints of this drawing around, some of them better, some worse.  This was old, stained, scarred and not in good shape.  I cleaned and fixed it, reframed, and now it is ready to go to a new home.  Yours?  It is hanging in the studio where you can see it.

I wasn’t sure I could get it back to good shape, but I think it looks better than new, and has a certain character that only age can give such a work.  I reframed it in extravagant mats and mounts…  the frame although new,  looks older and fits the print well.

When you come to yoga you can have a look.

ON THE SEWING FRONT.

The “Waterfall Dress” has sold to a dressmaking client…  She came to give me a new commission,  saw the dress and fell in love immediately (of course).  It was love at first sight.   She is a wonderful, tall person and the dress fell and flowed on her as she walked – It was perfectly as I had imagined.  She just had to have it (I am not tall enough – if I was, I would have kept it).

So I won twice – I got a new commission and sold my favourite dress to a client who looks fabulous in it.  She is taking it to Germany so she can drift around the galleries looking fabulous.

I am on the hunt now for material for a black edition, and I would love to make a white “Wedding” dress using this technique.
