Dear Yogis,

Please note that our next Yoga Luncheon, noon on Saturday the 30th of March,  will be held at 600 ABOVE the new WineBar in Woodend (where Les’s fruit shop used to be).  I have been in, checked out the menu and booked a table in the (quieter) back room close to the open fire – just in case the weather turns cold. The forecast is for “coolish” weather, but we always have that here.  I think it will be lovely, and different.

The owner says the joint will be jumping and always talks up the venue when I go in,  and acts like the crowd is getting ready and will arrive any minute, although I have only seen three in there, and they were buying wines.  The sign said “Oysters $3” and you don’t sell oysters for $3 if you are not trying to get more customers I would say – even on a Wednesday?  I will be interested.

Those folk I spoke to who have visited were seated near the refrigerated wall, and complained of the cold, but by booking a back room table near the fire I think I have averted that..  Actually the back rooms are very small and we may have a room with a fire to ourselves.

They do platters rather than individual meals, but all who have contacted me have said they were looking forward to something different to our usual venue.  This is different.  They do have wines on special on the day, but their $3 oysters are only available on Wednesdays (sorry).  It would be lovely to make this a regular venue if you like it.

Dear Yogis,

Just in case you thought it was all business here, take note of “Dolly” (or “Kate” as she has on her TyTag) she is absolutely gorgeous and larger than usual at 9inches – a sequinned dragon I just could not resist.  She is a Ty doll with all her tags, and there are the spelling errors on the tag which some people think is significant, but no mention of Germany which would put her into a very special category if there was.  Nevertheless she is worth about $85+ at the moment, which will only increase, $300+ if there was a mention of the German distributor on her name tag.    As they say on the Antique Road Show “she is going no-where, I love her”, but I am realistic enough to know that for the right price most things are for sale (to the right buyer).  For starters you would i think have to like stuffed toys as much as I do.

I have had a few good buys lately – the topper for last month was a bottle of Bulgari perfume which I bought to use.  It was $20 at the op shop which is a lot at the op shop.  Something told me it was “different”, sadly it was not in a box, but on checking I discovered it was a Limited Edition and therefore was worth $465 even at the cheapest outlet.  This really is just for me.  It goes with my chemistry, smell gorgeous, and I am using it.  You have to be careful with perfume – if it doesn’t smell like the perfume you remember, and it doesn’t last, even if the bottle looks perfect, it probably is a fake – there are lots out there usually smelling overwhelmingly of vanilla.

ART.  I have nearly finished the portrait for the “portrait competition” at the Mt.Macedon Gallery.

I didn’t want it to be ordinary as I may want to use it in the future.  I painted it on tea bags and made reference to the darning by painting stitches over the patches in the background, which is made up of a print of my angel painting also cut into patches (a prototype-type of an homage to Iris Apfel)

I am tempted to go the Andrew Wyeth way.  He used to throw a bucket of whitewash over his portraits as he finished them, turn his back and walk away – not reviewing the work until it was dry..  It sounds terrific and gave a lovely lacey feel to the finished painting, but he worked in oil, and I work in watercolour.  It would be awful if I chucked a bucket of whitewash over the painting and lost it!  It sounds simple but there are many things to consider. I am working my way around them.  Courage, courage.

Dear Yogis,

I am well into the self portrait.  I have had to paint it upside down so I don’t listen too much to the brain.  I am painting my face in blues and colours, so I know the result will be different, but I think I have the eyes and the mouth right – always a problem.

The background is a patchwork of tea bags, and behind that a patchwork of a print of the angels….I thought that someone might like to buy it or I might like to have it on cards, so it had to be different – not just like photograph.  It had to mirror my interests.  Teabags, paintings, sewing (boro), and so on.  I have the frame, although it will cost me about $80 to replace the ordinary glass for non-reflective glass…..  Thank goodness it is not a large painting.

I have so much work at the moment.  A commission for a painting (large painting I am going to do in three pieces) , an exhibition in my gallery will have to be in the next month or so – I have a number of ideas for this, which could be a tribute to Iris Apfel.  PLUS I do want to do an exhibition of scientific illustrations of bones.  So if you have any ex-husbands buried in your backyard, a skull and a pelvis would be good!  Otherwise, just bones.  Please drop them in and leave them at the front door preferably in a bag with a name of the animal (not attached please) and the name of the bone “sheep skull”, “rat skull”,  “racoon baculum” (Texas Toothpicks!) and so on.  The bones don’t have to be big (although I would like the skull of a great ape), just in good condition.  Thanks.
