Dear Yogis,

Nothing much to say except I am glad I am going backwards in time around my house and garden, away from electricity, away from “modern”.

Have you dealt with Origin lately… I was happy, over-paid my bills on time on a plan,  and over a year or so accumulated about $650 credit.  Origin were very reluctant to refund the credit, and it took about 2 weeks of daily calls to get my own money back.  Although I was refunded the credit, there was a condition that applies to everyone, I did have to go off my plan and then re-apply to get back on.  In the time that had elapsed (about 2 weeks), the price of my plan increased.  This increase amounted to about $20 every 2 weeks!!! and there seems to be no way of reducing this, this is the base rate  – in spite of the fact that I had MASSIVELY reduced my electricity use. They did say that I would be credited with any over-payment of electricity charges, obviously I would have to go through the same procedure to get it back.

It appears to me that Origin is accumulating our money and using it over the period of our plan, and holding on to it as long as possible, and putting in place mechanisms to dissuade us from getting it back (yes, they tried to tell me it was not a REAL credit).   I will let you know my actual reduction when I get my bill next quarter.    I have been pleased with Origin in the past, but I am not pleased with this, and will be looking around for a new supplier.  Any suggestions?

MORE ON THE FIRE FRONT
The band LED ZEPPELIN had a fireplace complete with logs on their private plane (obviously “ex-Origin” customers too), however, mine is doing well in the house.  I am learning so much about dealing with wood and logs at my (venerable) age.  Gone are the days when I would willingly swing a splitter but there are options I have found and I am trying them all.  There is a wonderful thing that looks like an instrument for a torture chamber, but is a wood splitter that reduces energy needs – I am getting one of those, and a mini-mini ladies chain saw which will cut small logs up to 10cms, and I am getting one of those.  When I have used them I will let you know.

It does take thinking about.  It does take acceptance of change, and it does lean heavily on yoga.  Without yoga and meditation I doubt that i could make these changes either mentally or physically – Forget about the gym.  God gave me the garden, the physical and the mental challenges and the computer so I could let you all know.  It is my responsibility to use them in the right way and to teach as many of you as are listening.

Dear Yogis,

Another full day on my “farm”. It is not a farm in the ordinary sense, but I do everything here that I used to do on the farm, trying to be as self sufficient as I can. My latest purchase is a little fan for the top of my wood fire.  I didn’t buy model with a fan, and now I have little fan which sits on the top of the unit and pushes the air around using the hot air itself as the energy source.  No gas, no electricity, no solar, just the energy of the heat from the fire itself.  How great is that!

I went to the dentist in the morning. It was like no visit I have ever had before. Normally for a filling I need to be deadened from the neck up, and even then it may not work.  This time, I had NONE and apart from a little hiccup when the dentist had to change the drill head as it was bit aggressive, everything was as smooth as and took no time at all.  I thought that the dentist may have hypnotised me (I am a terrible dental patient), but she said no.  So,  she has cleaned my teeth with no deadening of my teeth required, and now the same for fillings. What a blessing.  I might even be able to look forward to dental appointments.  Where?  The Woodend Family Dental Practice.

I have got a few canvas panels ready to paint some angels – spurred on by my guide N’Doyan.  I have always loved bringing my guides and angels to life on a canvas, but haven’tbeen close to them in this way for a while, however, with the house feeling so warm and welcoming thanks to my little heater, I can relax and drift enough to allow Angels to come through onto a canvas.

NATURAL ART MATERIALS

I have invited you to join me in making natural art materials – pens, inks,  paints… using ancient techniques.  No-one has yet been brave enough to join me, but i am still here, still looking at my garden and my “country” and seeing how it can inform my work (and maybe yours one day).

You may not think about it when you paint a picture using modern materials, that ochres, like everything else are under threat are changing due to climate change.  If like me, you look around when you are out walking and see the colours of the ground, maybe you will see these changes.  Earth and ochres are living things, and in many areas, sacred… but we just walk over the top of them with no thought.

If you are a forager, artist, and part time/amateur researcher  you too can discover the threat the climate crisis poses to the earth’s stores, the multi-sensory and sometimes uncanny nature of such an apparently “common” substance, and how ochre’s legacy reaches far beyond its alluring color.  Yes colour.  Ochre comes in blues, greens, reds, whites and  yellows, as well as the colours you are familiar with.  Start using it in your work – or make a record of what occurs around you.  Learn to do more with less.

Hi there Yogis,

Well, I had my flu injection on Saturday morning.  I don’t feel flu’y however, I have got a cold sore.  I haven’t had one of those for years, and my skin is extremely itchy… so I think it has stirred up a herpes virus which has been sitting dormant somewhere in my body just waiting to be woken up.  The remedy for this is DANDELION (roots and greens), which I will be sourcing wherever I can later in the day.

There is so much to do now I am living in a different era to the rest of you – wood fire (carting, and stacking wood), herbalism, jamming, gardening. You will be pleased to know my little French smoothing iron is working beautifully.  Last night I did the first ironing with it – it is heavy, and it doesn’t lose heat like my electric  cordless ironing station.   It is that little word “electric” that makes all the difference.  Now I am “unplugged” in that regard… but I am still walking backward.  There are other things I need to walk backwards in time effectively.  I don’t think I will be walking without shoes or socks to collect eggs at 5 in the morning as Tash Tudor did (I am told).

If you want to be more self sufficient, let me know.  There may come a time when there is little option.  Hard to think about when all is good, but, as the Buddha said – “This too will pass”.  He was not just talking of troubles, but of all things, good and bad.

GOODBYE TO PLASTIC BAGS….

There are two types of thick reusable plastic bags the Woolworths Group sells for 15 cents and 45 cents (as does our local Coles). They were brought in back in 2018 after the supermarket phased out single-use plastic bags.

Woolworth’s changeover to paper will happen over the next year, but when exactly will depend on which state you’re in — and how many bags your local has in stock. “We know the change may be an adjustment for some customers and that’s why we’re phasing this change in over the coming year,” Woolworths supermarkets managing director Natalie Davis said.   Big W and Woolworths will begin gradually running down stock of the bags before they’re cut off completely.  The Group says this will be complete by June next year.

If you forget your bag (as I often do), paper bags will still be available for 20 cents.   “But ultimately, we want to sell less bags altogether,” Ms Davis said.   Woolworths’ paper bags are made from 70 per cent recycled paper, are designed to carry up to 6 kilograms and are supposed to be reused.  Because it is close handy I do use Coles ,  and I have not seen any re-usable paper bags with handles at that store.  I will let you know when they catch up with Woollies!

Why do I use Coles? I would have a 20 minute car trip plus parking problems to get to Woollies which would cancel out any savings in terms of renewables.  IGA is going open in our town.. however, the council keeps on demanding more and more compliance, and combine this with covid problems and the opening  may be some time off, however, everyone is waiting for the day it does.

It will absolutely impact Coles which has I think become clearing house like “CostCo” (as has our Kmart).  You cannot guarantee brands or stock.  When they have sold a shipment you never know if (or when) more of the brand you want will arrive.  Coles is all about profit.  They no longer “obviously” support the community. For instance they have done away with the beloved and I think essential,  Community Notice Board (they do have room for half a dozenA4 pages!), and they have left over,  non-food what looks like Target Stock in baskets in the isles – blankets, cupboards, and so on. Plus the frozen vegetable section is bereft of produce unless you want pizza, peas or chips which take up most available space.   Please bring back Ivor Johnsons original town supermarket.  He cared about the community.

PLEASE MAKE TIME FOR THE ONE HOUR FREE TEACHER TRAINING ZOOM THIS EVENING.
WE ARE REPEATING “THE PURUSHATRAS”.  We did a long session in the studio yesterday, but it brought to me how these definitely need repeating every so often. If you don’t get an invite, email me asap and I will send you an ID.  It starts at 6.30 – please don’t try and get an ID AFTER this time – I will be busy and not answering emails!
