Dear Yogis…

Another busy week.  The shops are having a bumper run up to Christmas which is good for the economy, bad for landfill.  Thank goodness people are bringing me favourite clothing items they can no longer buy, and want replicated.  Little dresses, blouses to be remodelled.  This is wonderful for the client who gets back an item they have loved, and better for the environment as there are less items in landfill, and less items purchased which won’t be used.  You can never replace a cherished item of clothing, you have to reproduce it.

BEARS FOR CHRISTMAS
If you or your group need bears to put under the Christmas tree,  bears for refugees, those in hospital, or whomever, please let me know.  I do plan to give  away as many as I can.  They are all washed, renovated, cleaned, just waiting for a tree to sit under and a child (or adult)  to love.

Dear Yogis,

What can I say – more rain, and still more rain, some lightening, some thunder…  The garden is going gangbusters and the snails are on the march, however, it is good weather to be indoors sewing, and there is plenty to do.  If the sun was shining and i was sat indoors at my sewing table I would be wishing to be outdoors – as it is I am happy to be marooned among fabric and thread.

I have been making a plan of MY garden and am much inspired by The Late Derek Jarman (and not at all by Bangay).  Derek was a polymath and was creative in many mediums – filming, sculpture, writing, art of all kinds.  Tragically he died too soon of AIDS when it was raging through the gay community.

For me, in the studio I have a teddy bear and a pair of dolls to renovate, and the Stole to finish on time…I am getting there.  Hopefully, by the time the sun comes out I will be ready to get into the garden.. This slow time (The Rains) has really shown me where I want the garden and house to go.  I am inspired.

Jarman said that “if a garden was not shaggy, forget it”.  I like shaggy, in fact I like everything about his house, inside and outside.  The fact it is situated not too far from power poles and a nuclear plant isn’t inspiring, but given its disadvantages, Derek made it into an artwork in itself.  It is now owned by a foundation (Creative Folkestone) which uses it for creative residencies, and raising money through very controlled visits from the public.  I love everything about it.  Before it was taken over by “Creative Folkstone” to preserve it, the public got in and stole the metal sculptures, and garden installations.  I would wish that they would return them, but I know it won’t happen.

Dear Yogis,

Another perfect day in paradise if you can discount the snails… they are taking over the garden – even the birds are sick of them.  I wouldn’t mind a temporary invasion of ducks who never tire of snails and slugs.

THE MICE.

I just couldn’t resist, another piece for my hat – an exquisite hand made mouse, perfect right down to the little press-studs on his jacket.  I bought it at an op-shop and because it was small it hardly cost anything at all.  No-one really looked at the beautiful stitching, and the attention to detail.  Where to put it? Where else than on my hat.  There is room at the moment, and my students in Windarring just love it, although I am waiting for a name to come to him (it is a him perhaps).  The sewing of the mouse is an inspiration.

One of my co-workers at Windarring knits vintage style items out of vintage wool.  I would never have learned of her skill if she hadn’t seen the mouse and started to talk about her “art-knitting”.  Maybe she can show some of her work here at the studio on one of our open days.  The mouse begins to work its magic.

TAROT AND MY HAT.

Look at this portrait of the gypsy “Lilo Smith” painted in 1937,  by the Late Dame Laura Knight.    What a wonderful face – what a splendid hat!  And, look at her hair – henna in the front, black plaits behind. Gorgeous, outrageous.  My great, great grandfather wore a fantastic hat, but nothing, nothing as wonderful as this one worn by Lilo.

Laura was the second female artist accepted by the Royal Academy in London.  If you google her you will see what an amazing body of work she had.  The portrait of the gypsy caught my attention (especially the hat), and if I weather like her I will be happy.  A woman after my own heart.

Laura was prolific and broke the boundaries for women artists with a number of “firsts”.  She even did a series of designs for the popular and highly sought after ceramicist Clarice Cliff.

I will have to chat to this lovely gypsy – I am sure she will be a help. Anyone for Tarot? She has awakened me again, and goodness knows what will happen when I chat with her.
