Dear Yogis,

Monday already and only a few days to the Easter Holidays (School holidays have already begun! Holidays, holidays)… keep in mind Covid does not take a holiday and beware.  We already have new covid cases reported in to us, and students absent.

NATURALLY DYED EASTER EGGS – Making these naturally dyed eggs with herbal tea is so easy!   I have made these eggs when I had children at home .  For Easter and also during the year (as a way of preserving eggs) I have used red onion skins which gave a beautiful mahogany red without the addition of any mordant (and I got to eat the eggs afterwards). This week i will make these and show you in the Wednesday newsletter.

Calendula, turmeric, and hawthorn berry were definitely better with vinegar added to the dye.   Lavender and elderberry were arguably better with alum added to the dye, but the vinegar versions worked well.  Chamomile and rose hip were about the same with alum or vinegar.  Alum may be bought from some hardware stores, Natural health food stores, and on-line of course.  I am sure our local cook shop would get it in if I alerted them to the use at easter.

Here are the herbs that I used:  Hawthorn berry, Calendula, rose hips, lavender, chamomile, turmeric, red onion skins.  There are fields of dandelion flowers which you could use, and chive flowers, but neither of them have given a beautiful colour for me.  I am told that green tea and rooibos work, and can imagine they do, although I haven’t tried them.   If you want a real pink then use beetroot and remember vinegar in the dye.

  1. Hard boil the  number of eggs that you would like to color.   I recommend using white eggs as the color will show up better on them than on brown eggs, although for the onion skin method, it doesn’t matter because the colour is so dark.

2.  Next, make the herbal teas. Put about 1/4 cup of dried herb or about 4 tea bags  into a pint jar. For the dried flowers like calendula and chamomile, closer to 1/2 cup.

3.  Then boil some water and pour it over the herbs in the jars. Let the herbal teas steep

4.  Add either one teaspoon of alum or one tablespoon of vinegar to the tea. The tea can also be split up into two jars if you want to do one with alum and the other with vinegar – the colour will be different.

Leave until the colours are as you want (maybe a couple of hours steeping).  After they have cooled, polish with a soft cloth.  They look beautiful.

THE ONION SKIN DYE –  My favourite..….   These are called “Morrocan Eggs” and is a way to preserve eggs, the colouring is not just an easter activity.  Chose the number of eggs you want to process and add to a saucepan and cover with cold water and the red outer onion skins.  Gently simmer until the eggs have reached a good colour.  You could possibly do this in a slow cooker although I haven’t.  The water needs to be kept at just before the boil temperature – simmering.  It can take an hour or two depending on the heat of the water.  The colour is a beautiful mahogany pattern.

If the eggs are slightly cracked, then you will see a marbling in the white when you remove the shells.  After the few hours of cooking and by action of the oil in the onion skins, the yolks become creamy, not crumbly as is usual in hard boiled eggs.

Apart from the fun of an easter egg, these eggs will last in the fridge for a long time, I am told months, but they never get a chance at my place.

TANTRIC Bach Flower Essences .  It is especially in working with flowers, that we have a compendium of remedies supportive to our individual and collective evolution, for it is in the realm of plants,  trees and flowers that we are able to address and heal our minds and emotions. There is nothing like the power and gentle beauty of flower essence medicine. Working with them, in my opinion, is the plant kingdom’s greatest gift for yogis, especially.

Dear Yogis…

“What time, descending from the sky, the Plants flew earthward, thus they spake:
No evil shall befall the man whom while he liveth we pervade,
Of all the many Plants whose King is, Soma, Plants of hundred forms,
Thou art the Plant most excellent, prompt to the wish, sweet to the heart.”    -Rg Veda Mandala X, Hymn 97

On loving the body:

We are yogis, and some of us concentrate just on asanas, thinking that yoga = asana.  Some of us are therapists, naturopaths, even herbalists, but only concentrate on the herbs, forgetting that our initial practice, a way to support ourselves and the world, IS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH OUR BODY.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, this is the soil from which our practice must grow and take shape. Our body is a temple and honouring that temple allows us to cultivate a healthy metabolism, change our lifestyle for the better, and connect with nature’s wisdom.  Like the plants themselves, we are born from the womb of Mother Nature (our primary teacher), and it to this that we will return. Only by honouring Her will we grow and thrive.

Working with you to build strength, I consult and teach in the area of herbalism for health and longevity.  As my clients and students advance, and move into more subtle realms, we begin to enter our subtle bodies. The plants in their “spirit” forms are benevolent beings we can connect to for support in this energetic realm. This is connecting to the vital essence of the plants, to their uniqueness.

Herbal students  and clients looking for answers to problems (where we all start) move from teas, tinctures and powders for organs and organ systems into the area of flower essences, subtle herbalism, and homeopathy, for it is in the subtle body and mind that we must now work. Vibrational remedies (Bach Flower Therapies are an easily accessible and understood example).. work with our vital force to clear the paths necessary for safe Kundalini Awakening – for connecting in a manner that cleanses the mind of negative impressions and uplifts the heart for more beauty and building caring relationships.  We rarely consider herbs with yoga, and even less frequently would we take them to assist in the health of chakras.

Sure, we  can take hawthorn for a heart problem and leave it at that, but the physical manifestation is a reminder that more is going on.  To address this difficulty holistically we must look after the breathing, the yoga asana, the chanting, relaxation, and Bach therapies – not forgetting the opportunity to express GRATITUDE.

NAMASTE – JAHNE

Dear Yogis,

Wednesday is such a busy day (and yoga at 1pm today gang!).  How to get everything done is the challenge.  Everyone is literally THROWING themselves into work (or gardening) without adequate preparation, having not paid attention to the fact they have been Covid “resting” for 2 years.  Your brain has made a decision about the best way to “be”, it has formed an opinion, and you have gone against that. This creates (over time) referred pain.  People have opinions about what and where the injury actually is, but most therapist treat the symptoms not the source which can be multiple – well downstream or differentiated from the actual site.

At my Studio Clinic, we (I) see the body as a whole – a “living landscape”, not little areas of wellness punctuated by other areas pulling the fabric of the body down.

BACH – A simple system of healing

In my clinic we don’t do just one thing because injury is more complex than most think.  You won’t get last relief just by treating a symptom.  We treat discomfort, or pain, on all levels.

Dr. Bach’s intention was for the Bach Flowers to be a simple system of healing that were available to everyone and easy to use.

This system of treatment  may be used in every household.  To treat at this level, no science, is necessary  apart from the simple methods described in our courses and classes.  Those who will obtain the greatest benefit from this God-sent Gift will be those who keep it pure, free from science, free from theories, because everything in Nature is simple.

Many students ask me about RESCUE REMEDY.  It is able to be sourced at almost every Pharmacy – even Chemists Warehouse.  I think getting it from an actual herbalist or Bach Therapist is the most useful because you know when the remedy has been formulated.  You also may know where the plants in the remedy were sourced – and hopefully that will be locally.

Bach Rescue Remedy contains Rock Rose, Impatiens, Cherry Plum, Star of Bethlehem and Clematis.

The Australian Rescue Remedy by Ian white comprises Angelsword,  Crowea, Dog Rose, Fringed Violet, Grey Spider Flower, Sundew, Waratah.  In my clinic I can use the Bach remedy from Bach (which I prefer), or use that as the beginning and adapt to the client who presents, mostly using my pendulum to make decisions.  This is usually the most effective for me, and ultimately for my clients.  Every person is different therefore every remedy is marginally different, also taking into account the time of the year and the herbs that are available at the time.  Yes, I have them collected and stored, but I am aware that the plant is most powerful at its special time of the year.

Short term usage: 2 drops (4 of Rescue Remedy) to be taken directly into the mouth, added to a beverage of your choice and sipped at intervals – or tapped on the temples on chakra points.
Longer term usage: Add 2 drops (4 drops of Rescue Remedy) of up to 7 remedies into a 30 ml amber dropper bottle.  Take 4 drops at least 4 times a day either directly into the mouth, added a beverage of your choice, or tapped on the temples on chakra points.

HOW I WORK.  I have a number of possibilities depending on what the client needs (rather than what I THINK).  The condition is assessed on a number of levels.  What is happening in the client’s life and their response,  how they are living NOW, and thirdly what they are FEELING.  Then we explore what is needed –  being able to use YOGA, BACH Therapies, BOWEN Massage.  We can also use the ION-KI SPA to move and clear the energy in the meridians.

This combination of therapies is very effective on every level, and also affords the BACH remedies and some other herbs and mushrooms to support them in their healing journey.  They take these herbal and plant remedies with them, having begin the process at the my studio.  We have dried and sliced Reishi, especially mixed herbal teas, Bach and flower/herb remedies, Turkey tail powder SHILAJIT (which is getting rave reviews from clients – a huge energy booster), and my usual oils and essences.  See my books online especially the Bach course, and KANNABIS KITCHEN.

A Lineage of Celtic Wisdom

Dr. Bach regarded HOLLY as one of the two most primary flower essences in all of his repertory. While the Wild Oat is used in a fundamental way to give the soul its orientation to the outer world, the Holly is regarded as the most universally applicable of essences to heal the inner being and to stimulate the basic loving nature of the human soul. Holly should be considered not only as a remedy to administer in specific therapeutic situations, but also as a threshold essence for anyone wishing to advance in flower essence therapy.

Bach’s recognition of the Holly stems from a strong lineage of Celtic wisdom. The Druid initiates developed a sacred alphabet, called the Ogham, based upon the archetypal qualities of trees. The Holly, known in Gaelic as Tinne ruled the eighth moon of the year, or the month of June. The glyph for Holly is that of a spear, meaning literally, “I am a battle-waging spear.”

The Holly speaks to the fierce capacity of the human soul to take the descent into the underworld, bringing inner light into darkness. Thus we can understand the signature of the tree, with its ability to germinate without sunlight, favoring dark, moist conditions that are more strongly related to the downward earth pole. Its stiff, pointed leaves are not unlike thorns or “spears.”
