GOOD MORNING YOGIS,

It’s a Woodend winter morning and as usual the sun peeked its head out for about an hour in the middle of the day – but that was enough.  After that we had a collection of weathers.  Read, “almost” snow, windy periods where it didn’t feel too bad.  I start my day in my garden, especially now I have a small wood heater and have to tend her first thing, and get the wood in for the day.

I wander through the garden, favorite mug in hand, snipping a bit of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), rose petals, and catnip (Nepeta cataria). Of course, I can’t forget to pick some yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and nettle (Urtica) on the way . I bring the mug back indoors and take advantage the water boiling on the wood heater. Once ready, I pour the boiling water over my freshly gathered herbs and steep for 10 minutes before enjoying. This is my ideal morning.

My garden has slowly morphed from a traditional kitchen garden filled with an abundance of vegetables into a tea garden. What many think when they hear about a tea garden is a patch of land filled with traditional tea plants, Camellia sinensis is just one example. However, for me, it is a garden filled with a multitude of herbs and medicinal plants.

I have always grown herbs alongside my vegetables. If you are very sensitive to using sprays, my go-to is the natural way – although this takes longer for us to see the plants at work.  They not only keep garden pests away, but they can also help your vegetables grow in greater abundance. One example of this is growing basil next to your tomato plants to improve your yield, repel insects and disease, and improve the flavor  – it can’t keep the frosts at bay however.  I can’t grow basil in the cold here, but I do have Greek Basil, and Lebanese Cress.   As the years go on, I find myself adding more herbs with less and less room for the vegetables. This year I started a second garden for my vegetables, plus two new raised garden beds so that most of my  garden could be dedicated to my beloved herbs with a few veggies and pollinator-friendly native flowers here and there.

These are the plants you will find growing in my tea/herb garden:

*Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) *Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) * Rose (Rosa) * Nettle (Urtica dioica) * Echinacea (Echinacea) (Planted but not up till spring) * Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)  * Catnip (Nepeta cataria) * Blue vervain (Verbena hastata) – Spring * Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) – Spring * Peppermint (Mentha piperita) * Basil (Ocimum basilicum) – Greek and Lebanese * Dill (Anethum graveolens) * Red clover (Trifolium pratense) * Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) * Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) * Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) * Borage (Borago officinalis * Lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora) * Calendula (Calendula officinalis) * Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) * Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) * Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) * Herb Robert * Valerian * Watercress * Fat Hen * Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) * Blue sage (Salvia azurea)  * SouthernWormwood (Artemesia) * Dandelion * Yellow Dock * Gentian * Scleranthus  and other “Bach Flowers” not available until spring

It’s truly hard to pick favorites, but if I had to pick only five they would be Herb Robert, Nettle, Dandelion, Yellow Dock and Yarrow.  I use these every day throughout the year.

ART – MAKING CHILDREN’S COMPANION DOLLS
I have been working on a number of projects.  I think I am finished “Queenie” a large adult doll, and I am part way through a 4ft tall children’s companion doll (a big cat-like cuddle baby) four feet high.  I love making big, big dolls, and will show you once I have got the dolls looking presentable.  I am already planning the next which I think will be an angel and I am already gathering the materials to make her, all whites, and ice cream colours, net, voile, calico and so on- ethereal.

MIDNITE MINIATURES.
In the evening I paint, and have been involved painting the night sky on the birth month and year (day if possible) of my favourite people.  I finished the sky for the Dalai Lama last night (6th July, 1935).  If you want  a miniature made of the night sky on the month you (or you favourite person) were born, then I paint in mixed media on a tea-bag and post ready to frame.  Just send me time day and date of your birth, and I will do the night sky for that date.  Sometimes I can only get as close as the month and the year, not the day – the older you are the less technology was available at the time.  I can do special orders for a family set.  It is a special gift, a one-off original…..  You can of course wait for the CHRISTMAS IN JULY OPEN STUDIO and see the collection of Dolls and miniatures, and other things I have done over the past 6 months.

OPEN DAY – CHRISTMAS IN JULY

I plan to have a Christmas in July open day in my studio on the 17th July, complete with champers and mince pies.  I will send out an invite, however, if you want to get in first and be sure of an invitation (it will be just by invitation), please let me know.

Dear Yogis,

Nothing much to say except I am glad I am going backwards in time around my house and garden, away from electricity, away from “modern”.

Have you dealt with Origin lately… I was happy, over-paid my bills on time on a plan,  and over a year or so accumulated about $650 credit.  Origin were very reluctant to refund the credit, and it took about 2 weeks of daily calls to get my own money back.  Although I was refunded the credit, there was a condition that applies to everyone, I did have to go off my plan and then re-apply to get back on.  In the time that had elapsed (about 2 weeks), the price of my plan increased.  This increase amounted to about $20 every 2 weeks!!! and there seems to be no way of reducing this, this is the base rate  – in spite of the fact that I had MASSIVELY reduced my electricity use. They did say that I would be credited with any over-payment of electricity charges, obviously I would have to go through the same procedure to get it back.

It appears to me that Origin is accumulating our money and using it over the period of our plan, and holding on to it as long as possible, and putting in place mechanisms to dissuade us from getting it back (yes, they tried to tell me it was not a REAL credit).   I will let you know my actual reduction when I get my bill next quarter.    I have been pleased with Origin in the past, but I am not pleased with this, and will be looking around for a new supplier.  Any suggestions?

MORE ON THE FIRE FRONT
The band LED ZEPPELIN had a fireplace complete with logs on their private plane (obviously “ex-Origin” customers too), however, mine is doing well in the house.  I am learning so much about dealing with wood and logs at my (venerable) age.  Gone are the days when I would willingly swing a splitter but there are options I have found and I am trying them all.  There is a wonderful thing that looks like an instrument for a torture chamber, but is a wood splitter that reduces energy needs – I am getting one of those, and a mini-mini ladies chain saw which will cut small logs up to 10cms, and I am getting one of those.  When I have used them I will let you know.

It does take thinking about.  It does take acceptance of change, and it does lean heavily on yoga.  Without yoga and meditation I doubt that i could make these changes either mentally or physically – Forget about the gym.  God gave me the garden, the physical and the mental challenges and the computer so I could let you all know.  It is my responsibility to use them in the right way and to teach as many of you as are listening.

Dear Yogis,

Another full day on my “farm”. It is not a farm in the ordinary sense, but I do everything here that I used to do on the farm, trying to be as self sufficient as I can. My latest purchase is a little fan for the top of my wood fire.  I didn’t buy model with a fan, and now I have little fan which sits on the top of the unit and pushes the air around using the hot air itself as the energy source.  No gas, no electricity, no solar, just the energy of the heat from the fire itself.  How great is that!

I went to the dentist in the morning. It was like no visit I have ever had before. Normally for a filling I need to be deadened from the neck up, and even then it may not work.  This time, I had NONE and apart from a little hiccup when the dentist had to change the drill head as it was bit aggressive, everything was as smooth as and took no time at all.  I thought that the dentist may have hypnotised me (I am a terrible dental patient), but she said no.  So,  she has cleaned my teeth with no deadening of my teeth required, and now the same for fillings. What a blessing.  I might even be able to look forward to dental appointments.  Where?  The Woodend Family Dental Practice.

I have got a few canvas panels ready to paint some angels – spurred on by my guide N’Doyan.  I have always loved bringing my guides and angels to life on a canvas, but haven’tbeen close to them in this way for a while, however, with the house feeling so warm and welcoming thanks to my little heater, I can relax and drift enough to allow Angels to come through onto a canvas.

NATURAL ART MATERIALS

I have invited you to join me in making natural art materials – pens, inks,  paints… using ancient techniques.  No-one has yet been brave enough to join me, but i am still here, still looking at my garden and my “country” and seeing how it can inform my work (and maybe yours one day).

You may not think about it when you paint a picture using modern materials, that ochres, like everything else are under threat are changing due to climate change.  If like me, you look around when you are out walking and see the colours of the ground, maybe you will see these changes.  Earth and ochres are living things, and in many areas, sacred… but we just walk over the top of them with no thought.

If you are a forager, artist, and part time/amateur researcher  you too can discover the threat the climate crisis poses to the earth’s stores, the multi-sensory and sometimes uncanny nature of such an apparently “common” substance, and how ochre’s legacy reaches far beyond its alluring color.  Yes colour.  Ochre comes in blues, greens, reds, whites and  yellows, as well as the colours you are familiar with.  Start using it in your work – or make a record of what occurs around you.  Learn to do more with less.
