YOGA NEWSLETTER 16th August’17

THE AUSTRALASIAN YOGA INSTITUTE IS MISSION DRIVEN AND MEMBER SUPPORTED.  BECOME A REGISTERED MEMBER TODAY.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
During my yoga practice this morning, my cat came running up to me. She pulled back just before the mat and very slowly, walked around me. Then she sat and waited for my next move. Once I had finished, and because it was a beautiful morning, I sat on the deck and watched her. She was doing what I had been practicing. She was alert and centred, ready to move in an instant.

Yoga connects us to whatever is happening in our world. In Antonioni’s film on China (“The Middle Kingdom” – “Chung Kwo”) one sequence showed a busy intersection during the morning rush hour, featuring a man doing tai-chi on a bike. Like Pattabi Jois doing a headstand in the middle of Time Square, New York, he was doing his morning meditation and at the same time aware of the hectic traffic around him. As we practice yoga being everything in our day (“no gaps”) everything we need and want is there, nothing is missing, and we float on top of it. Desireless. No suffering.
NOTES FROM JAHNE..
Things are changing at speed.
My Car: I have been thinking of getting a new car for a number of months, and on Tuesday the choice was made for me. My car was jumped on by a kangaroo. The front light is broken, and the bumper cracked. All looked well, but then, my mazda just died in the drive. Turns over, no compression. Does anyone out there want a beautiful little Mazda MX6 with a recon motor to do up? Let me know. I love her and would like her to end up somewhere where she will be loved – not a wreckers yard. I have replaced her with a lovely white Celica.

This weekend I got a booking for an art exhibition in November, and I am putting the finishing touches to my full tarot set as well. So, life has been making a few changes so I can paint and draw more. This is quite exciting.

I usually have to be careful what I concentrate on, now it is even more important as the changes are coming thick and fast. New Printers, New Car, Art Show, New Tarot… the list goes on. I was thinking of updating the kitchen – I think I will put this off as there looks like some changes there too.
EMAIL:
Please use the email address yogafirst@optusnet.com.au for anything to do with accounts, or the usual yogafirst2@bigpond.com. To get to me. If you do want to speak to me personally, then email, make a time suitable for both of us, and then we can chat. If you do it this way, rather than just “wing it”, you can be reasonably sure I have time, and you will get my attention. POSTAL ADDRESS is not at my home – small mail box out in the open means that rain is an issue. Please address all land mail to the address it has always been – PO Box 14, Mt.Macedon. Vic. 3441. Until you see a change written here in large letters, that is where it will be.
PHONE:
I have a new landline. 0354 274 383. I had discussions with Telstra. The outcome was my landline and internet brought on line (they tell me NBN – but I am not sure. It is slow). They did however, replay me for line re-direction, the cost of the dongle and the pre-payment, plus line rental charges. So at the end of the day I felt marginally vindicated.
HYPERMOBILITY
The book and the DVD are available via ETSYwww.myyogabooks.etsy.com I now have interest in our research from a Medical Centre/Spa in ShriLanka (I would love to visit), various MD’s around Melbourne, and England. I hope that you have the 23rd September written in your diary. That is the day that we will be giving a talk at the Theosphical Society in Melbourne.   The Theosophical Society has asked me to give a talk on hypermobility, in Melbourne on the 23rd of September. YOGA AUSTRALIA has asked me to talk on hypermobility in Melbourne in February? Or the YA Conference in March. I believe that this is essential in your yoga teaching. So you can catch me in September at the Theosophical Society Theatrette, or, you can keep watching this space to find out other dates and times. There is growing excitement around that we are doing, not just from our senior teachers, and those persons who follow our research in this are.
The book and the DVD are on www.myyogabooks.etsy.com Restorative Yoga Therapy – Level 3 RESTORATIVE LEVEL 3
Please keep in mind that RYTA200, level 1 and 2 need to be done BEFORE level 3. The workshop timetable which includes LEVEL 3 attached above. There is a workshop for Level 2 happening on the 3rd of September. You can also stay for the teacher training. See the brochure above.
Teacher Training PLUS, 3rd September.
  2-4pm Teacher Training as usual
PLUS WORKSHOP – 9am to 2pm then 4 to 5.30pm, Restorative Level 2. For first timers the cost will be $375 for the workshop, plus the cost of distance training. For those who have done the workshop before, $50 for the refresher. This is a repeat of the first workshop (a reminder perhaps) with additions. A reminder or a help with the book and assignments. These levels all contribute towards helping you to be a better therapist. If you have not almost completed the teacher training course then you won’t have the anatomical and philosophical vocabulary to understand what we are doing. So work on your course, do the Restorative level 1 and 2, and keep this in mind for the next step. Come to my talks, and book for a workshop with me. Or book for a one-on-one to see how I work.
INSURANCE
From the 1st July there have been changes. I am working to make it a positive step. The insurance company is looking after the insurances totally . We based the course on graduating students in an average of 18 months to two years. If you are not teaching then you don’t need to be insured, and you will be registered when you graduate.   We do not hide the fact, however, when I ask you to read the applications and other information SLOWLY, we anticipate that you have done that, and won’t be surprised about the details and charges for the course.. Keep in mind that we are providing the skills for a career for less than $4,000 when some careers in health cost ten times that amount, and sometimes double that. That is extraordinary.   A charge for Registration and Insurance and $275 for a yearly video subscription is nothing in the light of that. INSURANCE ALTERNATIVES. AJGallagher seems to be the only one who will insure students who have not graduated but are teaching. I am looking at Dancesurance. They appear to insure students cheaply, and, if you have a studio, they are really the only ones who insure this with understanding. Cost? $276pa.

Why Register with THE AUSTRALASIAN YOGA INSTITUTE?

Thank you all the students who have responded to this call. Registration says you are a member of our school (and proud to be so), and at the very least the income received from the cost of registration allows us to give out scholarships, and help others in their desire to teach. We have a wonderful lineage that goes back through the Gita School to India and Tibet. Support us by being a fabulous teacher, and in time Affiliating with us, and taking our traditions into a complete Teacher Training School of your own.

THE AUSTRALASIAN YOGA INSTITUTE…

Honouring the Universe – The philosophy of The Australasian Yoga Institute….

Dedicated to a tradition of excellence in teaching for more than 40 years, The Australasian Yoga Institute offers yoga teachers comprehensive and systematic training in classical yoga. We teach yoga techniques for body, breath, mind and spirit in 200hr and 500hr certification programs. Our programs include training in meditation, asana. GOOD MORNING DEAR STUDENTS
EMAIL CHANGE: FIXED. ALL GOOD!  Please use yogafirst@optusnet.com.auOr the usual yogafirst2@bigpond.com. Vic. 3441. Until you see it written here in large letters, that is where it will be.

TRAVELLING: I will be in Brisbane on the 18th and 19th May and in Shepparton/Euroa on the 25th/26th May. There are a couple of spots left if you want to have a chat, or explore training or Affiliation. Please email me ASAP and make an appointment to see me. It has been a long time since I hit the road, so make every opportunity count, who knows when it will happen again. Now that I have locked the travelling dates, those two weeks have a magical quality, and everyone who has been saying they want to see me here at home in Woodend, wants them that week. Not possible.

SCHOLARSHIP – Thank you to those wonderful students who have submitted for the scholarship. It has not yet been decided, but will be by the middle of the month. We need to be sure, and we will be. Thank you also to that student, who understanding what was required after they had submitted, took themselves out of the race. It took more understanding to do that than it did to submit. Thank you. As I said, we need  someone with BIG, BIG, DREAMS.

VIDEOS: Please note. Videos are subscribed on a one year basis. Doesn’t matter how long you pay the course off  – 12 or 18 months. Doesn’t matter how long you take to do the course. The videos are a 12 month subscription. Once the 12 months is up the computer will remind you.  Also take note that the videos are not in order. I do them and did them when students asked for them were. I did them in response to questions, and not to make money, or match up with the modules. What is Nirvana? Seeing one thing through to the end. Hell is not a punishment, it is training.   RESTORATIVE YOGA THERAPY – PLEASE PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS. It is important if you want to progress. I am working every day to get it properly accredited and the right boxes to be ticked. If you want to talk to me about the course, email me, and give me a few time options and we can schedule a phone call.

THE NEW LEVEL 2 COURSE IS TAKING BOOKINGS FOR THE SECOND WORKSHOP IN CASE YOU MISSED THE FIRST – planned date 27th and 28th May,  2pm to 4.30 on Saturday, 1pm to 4pm Sunday.  For the best – the latest about Restorative Yoga Therapy classes, Training and THE ALLIANCE….
Go To www.restore.moonfruit.com If you want to get your Restorative Yoga Therapy Certification at Level 2 and move on to level 3, then you will need to do your LEVEL 1 FIRST. You need that certificate BEFORE you can do Level 2. Please pay attention. For previous students: If you have done the last workshop, loved it and would like to repeat it (every class is a little different)  you can for a small fee, I would love you to join in and share your experiences since your workshop.

The Restorative Yoga is becoming the backbone of our practice, and there have been some new developments. I have already informed most of you that there are three levels.

LEVEL 1 is the teach yourself course on www.myyogabooks.etsy.com

LEVEL 2 is the RESTORATIVE YOGA COURSE and the Introduction to Therapy with emphasis on Structural Yoga Therapy..

And LEVEL 3 (coming later in the year) In this I am presenting a course which will include nutrition, the use of exclusive essential oils and therapeutic mixtures which can be prescribed and used in conjunction with the yoga to make it a stand- alone clinical practice. This would be a great addition to the practice of those who are doulas (both with pregnant women and the dying), and those who routinely work with the chronically ill, people in recovery… etc etc.   This is going to be a groundbreaking course.

Please email me, and let me know your intention, or go to www.restore.moonfruit.com for details and an application.

“THE RESTORATIVE YOGA THERAPY ALLIANCE” – is a project we are currently working on, using The International Yoga Therapy Assoc. as our model. It will take us years to get to their level of perfection – but it is something you need. It will be an organisation aligned to The Australasian Yoga Institute. A branch of The Institute which will be inviting papers, focusing and sharing the more therapy aspects of what we do in Restorative Yoga. Not a medical model, but certainly a healing model.

“MASSAGE ALLIANCE” – Both this and “The Restorative Therapy Alliance” are departments of The Australasian Yoga Institute, which we are initiating in response to the bigger and bigger requirements being put on us by the registering bodies. Applying to these registering bodies has become onerous and in some cases nearly a full time job to come into compliance. All the CEC, reading etc required to become accredited. I do believe that we need to be trained, but enough is enough.  No amount of training produces a gifted therapist.. For instance, I have been a member of The MAA since it was started,  have trained in Australia and Europe years ago when certificates were optional extras, and have over the last 40 years done hundreds of massages – and now some academic registrar is saying that I don’t know enough, haven’t got enough certificates (a ridiculous Cert.1V), and haven’t had the experience to be part of their association, as if 40 years of massage practice is not enough. Well, it is enough for me. And this is my answer. We have opened a Massage Association of the Yoga Institute, and we have insurance in place. Maybe you would like to join us. YOUR EXPERIENCE WILL COUNT.

WITH REGARD TO STUDENT INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION (again):

If you have received insurance re-registration automatically AND DIRECTLY from A.J.Gallaghers in Queensland, let me know, and then disregard it.  They have been using old lists, and have put together a mass mail out.  I have not authorised this mail out and it does not take into account your ranking or where you are in your training.  It is just a couple of new hot-shots trying out their wings.  They have caused all kinds of mayhem, just when we were getting back on our feet, and just when A.J.GAllaghers Queensland Parmia office were recovering from the disruption caused by flooding.

Why Register with THE AUSTRALASIAN YOGA INSTITUTE?  Registration says you are a member of our school (and proud to be so), and at the very least the income received from the cost of registration allows us to give out scholarships, and help others in their desire to teach.   It is not mandatory, but it is recommended, and we encourage you to do it.   How do you  support and encourage your lineage? – or do you perhaps dream up a more glamorous version, something featuring India perhaps?  We have a wonderful lineage that goes back through the Gita School to India and Tibet.  Margrit Segesman the founder of the Gita school (a very important part of our lineage)  was sent to Australia from India to teach yoga by her Heart Guru, but she never disclosed who that was – seeking to break the “guru tradition”..  When you register you are not just supporting our endeavours, you are acknowledging the wonderful teacher that Margrit Segesman was…and yoga is.  A living tradition.  Support us by being a fabulous teacher, and in time Affiliating with us, and taking our traditions into a complete Teacher Training School of your own.

Right now – TODAY, mark in your diary when your registration and insurance are due – Registration and insurance should be applied for YEARLY on the same day (it is easier this way).   – at this time contact us if WE (this office) have not contacted you. Note well  that although Lloyds of London are noted as the underwriter, AJGallagher is the insurer. If you have an issue contact us – we have a AJG/Parmia hot line, and we are the interface between you and them THE AYI COURSE VIDEOs. As it says in your initial emailed information pack, from the very first one with how to set yourself up clearly noted, please make a journal note of all the yoga you do in a day, and that includes the videos. A computer is just a computer, and whilst we make every effort to get them to comply with our will, they sometimes don’t. If you have a daily journal and mark down in it all the yoga you do and watch, and then on a monthly basis transfer the totals to your passport, you will have a hard copy record, and a computer record.

Go to “CHOOSE LIFE”, a home based on-line restore and recover program. YOGA NIDRA USB on ETSY.  For those of you who want to do yoga nidra like we do (like I do). Now you can. I have done a USB stick so you can plug it in and have a wonderful, long meditation whenever you can. Please go to my growing shop on www.myyogabooks.etsy.com

THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY: Please people, make it an important thing to do – don’ t leave it as part of your “ bucket list”. If you are looking for reference books THE THEOSOPHICAL LIBRARY is the go-to place. There are books there you will see no-where else. I go at least once a month. It is very old fashioned and you have to pay per term to be a member, but I urge you to do this. It is situated in a beautiful old building between Bourke street and Little Collins Street in Melbourne. Maybe you could join the Society.

Its Three Objects are 1. To form a nucleus of the Universal brotherhood of Humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, cast or colour. 2. To encourage the study of Comparative Religion, Philosophy and Science. 3. To investigate unexplained Laws of nature and the powers latent in the human being.  Approval of these objectives is the only condition of membership. YIN YOGA/ANATOMY/MEDITATION DVD’s –Please indulge in ALL three
They are the best, and will form the backbone of your yoga references. As I have told you before when I bought mine they cost $100 or so each. I thought that this was a good investment, and I still do. We have had to increase the price TWICE – everything everywhere is going up, and we have held this price for a number of years. Now $57.50. At this price we are accounting for currency increases and decreases, and they are still cheaper than I paid for mine initially. Look at Ebay – everyone is about the same. At twice the price they are still worth having. With Christmas coming, please order yours today. I don’t have many left and I am waiting for more stocks to arrive in the mail – at this time of the year they sometimes get caught up in customs. www.myyogabooks.etsy.com

THE GARDEN AND THE BEES – Last year I went on a bit about nettles. I love them, they are a great source of iron and taste delicious in pesto and as a spinach substitute. They grow wild in cow paddocks but even with careful tending, they do not grow wild for me. In fact, I couldn’t get them to grow at all. I even sprinkled seed in the front garden beds. Nothing happened.  A few months ago I had the drive made wider, all the dirt removed, and gravel put down. Guess what is growing lushly through the gravel (apart from mushrooms!) NETTLES. I got a good harvest and made pest. I also had some in pots, and even these seeds are coming up. We should have nettles for a while – once I fit in with their growing schedule, which seems a bit haphazard.

THE AUSTRALASIAN YOGA INSTITUTE IS MISSION DRIVEN AND MEMBER SUPPORTED.  BECOME A REGISTERED MEMBER……

Honouring the Universe – The philosophy of The Australasian Yoga Institute….

We teach yoga techniques for body, breath, mind and spirit in 200hr and 500hr certification programs. Our programs include training in meditation, asana. GOOD MORNING DEAR STUDENTS
EMAIL CHANGE: Please use yogafirst@optusnet.com.au (anything to do with accounts), Or the usual yogafirst2@bigpond.com. Vic. 3441. Until you see it written here in large letters, that is where it will be.

FROM JAHNE..
One of the core experiences in my life as a therapist was sitting with my late husband when he was dying.  I think I have spoken about the few minutes leading up to his death.  The core of this experience is to enter “the field”, sit with the profound stillness and peace that occurs at the time of actual death.  This moment is a gift and I hope that some of you have experienced it.  Once you have it will change how you work with people, and how you see the act of healing, or what we call healing.  It certainly has changed how I teach yoga, and how I do what we call massage.  It is why I don’t thump and bang the body – trying to change it, or fix it, but let the forces of life do the work.  What I have called before “the journey into the heart of listening”.

SHEPPARTON EUROA.  Keep in mind that I will be in Shepparton/Euroa this week.  All day Thursday culminating in a small Master Class at 6.30 at the Carrington Hotel.  At the moment I am thinking that this will be in my room, but there is a meeting room available if we overflow.

QUEENSLAND.  We had a wonderful meeting in Queensland, and have agreed to a weekend retreat at the end of August.  Start Planning today.

JHMS/EHRLOS-DAHN.HT – This is my area of interest and writing at the moment.  Hypermobility – or more commonly known as “double jointedness”.  If you see it on the outside, it is on the inside too.  I bet you didn’t know that.  Once you know about this, your teaching will never be the same, and one-on-one yoga will be your preferred style.  I will be in Shepparton on Thursday nite the 25th of May (thisThursday) and doing a specific teaching on this subject.  You will need to see this.  Just come along to The Carrington in Shepparton (opposite the Lake), and ask for my room number at the front desk.

With this work, please keep in mind that it is always changing – it keeps teaching me.  So it will have to be updated regularly.  Don’t be surprised.

HONOURARY REGISTRATION.  This week we awarded an Honorary Registration to Paula Duggan.  Paula has been a faithful student for quite a few years now, and in spite of throat cancer, and the implant that allows her to he heard, she keeps inspiring others and teaching.  I cannot imagine what she has been through or continues to endure but it has not stopped her.  She is an inspiration and continues to be so for many, many aspiring yogis.  Congratulations Paula.  (You will find her on Facebook if you want to drop a line). CANCELLATION:  The LEVEL 2 RestorativeYoga Workshop that was going to be held this weekend 27/28th – is cancelled.  I will let you know when the next one will be.  Probably the end of June.  LEVEL 3 the first workshop will be late September, so prepare now.    Get level one and 2 locked in. SCHOLARSHIP – Just to recap. This has not yet been decided, but will be by the end of the month. Then the real excitement will start.

VIDEOS: Please note.   When you first signed up you were given a password to access the videos.  There is lots more on them than you may anticipate, so go for it…  watch them.  They will answer a lot of your questions, and they will save you having to do some questions a second time.. What is Nirvana? Seeing one thing through to the end. Hell is not a punishment, it is training.   RESTORATIVE YOGA THERAPY – JUST TO RE-CAP….CANCELLED:  LEVEL 2 is the RESTORATIVE YOGA COURSE and the Introduction to Therapy with emphasis on Structural Yoga Therapy..THE NEW LEVEL 2 COURSE IS TAKING BOOKINGS FOR THE SECOND WORKSHOP IN CASE YOU MISSED THE FIRST – planned date 27th and 28th May, IS CANCELLED.

“MASSAGE ALLIANCE” – I am still working on this.  It seems a logical outcome of our work aligned to Restorative yoga therapy.  I do it in the context of a journey to the heart of listening, and not as a stand-alone hands on “Fix-it”.  I sit with the client and let the forces of life do the work.  Massage used in this way is remarkable, and makes everything else you do in a session deeper and and more meaningful.

WITH REGARD TO STUDENT INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION (again):

Had a wonderful meeting in Queensland with the Insurance company, and now understand much more about how they are trying to accommodate us, and provide the very best insurance and policies to help us.  We were their very first Yoga company on their books, and we are still looked after as though that remains the case – although we know it couldn’t be.  They must grow as we must also.

WHEN YOU SHOULD INSURE:  We based the course on graduating students in an average of 18 months to two years.  Keeping this in mind we thought you would not need insurance for those two years, so we gave you the first 12 months insurance and registration free, and ditto for the second – if you were not yet teaching.  However, this is changing as more people who are teaching already are joining our course to get registered and insured.   If you are not teaching then you don’t need to be insured, and you will be registered when you graduate.

If you do start teaching whilst you are still working on the course, then you will need STUDENT REGISTRATION in order to get STUDENT INSURANCE.  These are an extra cost and you should factor them in, as you must also factor in your videos which are also a yearly subscription. The first year is paid for in your fee, but from thereon it is up to you to renew.  This is not an unusual ask.  WE do not hide the fact, however, when I ask you to read the applications and other information SLOWLY, we anticipate that you have done that, and won’t be surprised.  Keep in mind that we are providing the skills for a career for around $3,000.  That is extraordinary.  A charge for Registration and Insurance and  $275 for a yearly video subscription is nothing in the light of that.

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended, and we encourage you to do it.   How do you  support and encourage your lineage? – or do you perhaps dream up a more glamorous version, something featuring India perhaps?  We have a wonderful lineage that goes back through the Gita School to India and Tibet.  My Heart Guru, Margrit Segesman the founder of the Gita school (a very important part of our lineage)  was sent to Australia from India and Tibet to teach yoga by her Heart Guru, but she never disclosed who that was – seeking to break the “guru tradition”.

WHATEVER YOU THINK, WHATEVER YOU KNOW, WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM BEFORE YOU START THIS COURSE – WATCH THEM.  That is why I did them!
