Dear Yogis,

Thank goodness I have a little wood fire… we were told the weather yesterday would be cold, but this morning is freezing, although (thanks to the wood  stove) the temperature in the house is OK, warm, lovely.  I am not chill.  I am glad I did my chores up the mountain yesterday when the weather was good, because snow and wet isn’t terrific on winding roads, particularly with heaps of sightseers who have never travelled on winding road, or snow.  I hope you are warm wherever you are.  Those lovely “lollipop” people who wave us on during roadworks are certainly earning their wages today.

HERBAL WORKSHOP

Last night at the HERBAL WORKSHOP we looked at making ROSEHIP CORDIAL.  Rosehips are at their very best for harvesting at the moment.  They are juicy and wrinkled and bursting with vitamin C.  I have made this enough times that I know the shortcuts, and totally forget about fiddling with seeds and fur.  I add ginger and grapefruit peel to the completed cordial and it tastes splendid.

It is interesting that WILKD ROSE REMEDY in Bach Flower Remedies is given for despondency/apathy, for people (or animals) who have collapsed into their fate…this remedy will pull them out of their gloom.  Rosehips contain VitaminC and it is interesting to me that this vitamin protects, and lifts your immune system.

We also considered making LAUNDRY BOMBS and LAUNDRY FABRIC SOFTENER.  I still haven’t made the tumble dryer squares, but I will.  There is so much to do.  I am writing down everything I am making and putting them into an etsy booklet called “CLEAN AND GREEN with Jahne”.  You might think we are moving into a period which replicates “The Roaring Twenties”, but I am cautious about this.  Although you can’t buy houses cheaply anywhere in Woodend, the prices are moving downward in outlying districts.  You can even buy a do-upper for about $400,000.  Any house at this price has not been available for a number of years.  So, start saving your pennies, things are changing – and that is why I am going back in time.  House prices are coming down but food and services are becoming more expensive. I am preparing.  If you want to know the old ways and you don’t have a mother or grandmother who has experienced them, I have.  You can come to me.  Conversely, if you have old recipes and old methods you would like to share with our group, I would love to hear from you.

TEACHER TRAINING:

We are enrolling our new Teacher Training classes.  If you are still working through the course, or if you would like to start there is no better time than NOW.  We have a FREE Teacher Training zoom session (only an hour which is as much as most people can put aside?) on Mondays at 6.30.  Last Monday we considered THE SANGHA and THE THREE JEWELS.  Where were you?  I don’t record them firstly because I believe you should be able to put aside one hour a WEEK for your yoga teacher training class, and secondly zoom charges us to record.  If you can’t spend ONE HOUR a week, then… please consider that I already invest in preparation, study etc to bring the sessions to you.

With regards to where we find ourself in history, there is always the Buddha to return to.  He said “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”, and “This too shall pass”.

NAMASTE – JAHNE

Dear Yogis,

After more than 15 years (when we were the “ground breakers” in web site design), our asana videos have given up the ghost.  If you are considering joining the course, or are new to the course, we now supply the videos on USB.  The students are loving it and it puts the control firmly in their court.  Winter is on the way, just around the corner and if you were in Woodend you would really know it was.

The upside with our weather are the fields dotted with marvellous fungi.

CLEAN AND GREEN

I have been making and experimenting this weekend, spurred on by living with my new wood stove (so comforting).  So “Little House on the Prairie” if you were old enough to remember that.

I made washing powder, fabric conditioner, Hungary Water, various teas, and last night put a couple of trays of Pine Mushrooms in the dehydrator.  What a treat.  You should see my pantry cupboard – it is bursting at the seams.  Today I have to take photographs and write the recipes down.

The washing detergent is so inexpensive I just couldn’t believe it.  For the initial items in BULK – remember I only used a fraction of any of these – it cost $4 for the Lectric Soda, $2.50 for the bi-carb, $8 for a bag of magnesium flakes and a few drops of essential oils.  For just a fraction of each of these I made enough “laundry bombs” in two cake pop trays, plus fabric softener which will give me enough for months of laundry.  Probably cost something like 50cents per wash max, maybe even less.  It got the whites super clean and they smell fresh – as if you had hung them outside.  Just throw three little “bombs” into the wash, put the softener in the little tray,  and away we go.

Today I am going to make spin dry sheets.  You can buy these at exorbitant cost (In the States I used “Febreeze”), and once I have tested them I will let you know the cost and the result. In the past I have made SPIN-DRY BALLS out of wool scraps (synthetic are not as effective).  These work well in the dryer to reduce static and creases and with the addition of a few drops of essential oil make the clothes smell lovely.  It will be interesting to see what the sheets do.

THEN I WILL WRITE ABOUT THEM.  You will be able to get all my secret recipes on ETSY. “CLEAN AND GREEN with Jahne”.

NAMASTE – JAHNE

Dear Yogis,

Thank you who came to our monthly luncheon.  I was great, and we hung about – always a good sign.  Please put the last Thursday in June in your diary NOW.  Don’t miss it.

I have gone back in time.  While you lovely people are tossing out your fires, and getting split-systems, I am “firing up”.  I now have a lovely little wood fire, and the shops I enquired at and the plumber who installed it told me I was not alone.  Many people are getting fires, because when the electricity fails, the wood is with us.  I fired it up for the first time last night.  It hasn’t got the SOUND and light that an open fire does, but it was beautiful and I loved it.   Years ago I seriously feng-shui’d the house.  It seemed from the calculations that the house would always be cold until I put a fire in the little dining room – it was the only suitable “FIRE” place.  I tried everything else (of course), but the chart was right.  The house is now warm with the little fire in the right place.

ALTHOUGH YOGA IS NOT OVERTLY POLITICAL,

…..we are women, we are parents, and need to keep abreast of changes to our liberties.  The USA leads in this (both forwards and backwards) and these laws ricochet around the world.  To think they don’t effect us is clearly not true.  I have had a gun pointed at me only three times in my life, and it is a scary feeling.  To have to deal with this on a daily basis with a police force and laws unable to protect me,  would cause some serious changes to how I think about where I live and how I live.  Americans have to face this DAILY.

Further to our previous newsletters about the changes to the abortion laws in the USA – this why precedents matter.  The Assault Weapons Bill (passed after the killing this week of 19 children and two adults at a Texas School) was the brainchild of Gov. Gavin Newsom who proposed it after the Supreme Court allowed Texas to enforce its abortion law, which allows Texans to sue anyone who performs or aids an abortion in the State for $10,000.  This Californian take on the Bill will allow private citizens to file suit against makers or sellers of untraceable ghost guns of illegal assault weapons.

On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Texas law banning abortion or at the least reporting it,  to remain in effect while abortion clinics sue to block it. That decision incensed Newsom, a Democrat who supports abortion rights.   “If states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives, then California will use that authority to protect people’s lives, where Texas used it to put women in harm’s way,” Newsom said in a statement released by his office at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Newsom said he has directed his staff to work with the state’s Legislature and its Democratic attorney general to pass a law that would let private citizens sue to enforce California’s ban on assault weapons. Newsom said people who sue could win up to $10,000 per violation plus other costs and attorneys fees against “anyone who manufactures, distributes, or sells an assault weapon” in California. “If the most efficient way to keep these devastating weapons off our streets is to add the threat of private lawsuits, we should do just that,” Newsom said.

Newsom is not taking the very brave step taken by our own Prime Minister John Howard who banned guns in the community, and confiscated them en masse,   but it is a step in the right direction.  Maybe we should in this case follow the USA, as I am sure that guns have been proliferating in our communities since the gun ban all those years ago.  Especially since it is so easy for those inclined to go on-line, get a kit and make a weapon more suitable to fighting a war in the desert.  Young people, hypnotised by video games move into the community and with no thought and huge guns,  picking off young children as they go to school in the neighbourhood as if they are just characters on a screen.     Following the Californian decision by Gov. Newsom – Joe Biden has announced a crackdown on “ghost guns”, untraceable firearms assembled from on-line kits that have been used in a rising number of shooting crimes.

Of course, Guns are only part of the problem.  Violent video games, unsupervised children, boredom, lack of morals or judgement, lack of respect for human life, or consequences for one’s actions etc. etc. also are growing issues and harder to deal with than removing guns. A prevailing feeling even among adults that nothing matters, no-one cares,   especially during our Covid difficulties, must also be a contributing factor.

Thank goodness we have yoga.
