Dear Yogis,
These days, a certain quote comes to our minds:
“Go back? No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible!
Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!”
– BILBO BAGGINS, THE HOBBIT BY J. R. R. TOLKIEN
New beginnings for us all post covid  and after almost 60 YEARS of solid yoga practise and teaching,  I have spent my days between yoga classes, not doing more yoga, but doing what I love to do…  MAKING THINGS.  In this time and space I am making dolls, and they have walked off the shelves, so I think I am doing things right.
They are not just for me, I get my pleasure in the making… I make them for children in crisis… and people who need comfort.  It is not only children who need a doll or a teddy – even older folk and those in aged care need a friend, something that reminds them on happy times.  Yes, they are surrounded by people and maybe things to do, but a soft toy is a personal friend.  I love my dolls, and Teddys.  The one to the right is a refurbished Ted.  New stuffing, washed, the jacket is under construction and then the face needs attention.
There are so many different dolls in my head, and quite different dolls.  I have been looking at my records at dolls I made with the late Mirka Mora, and later inspired by her (I am always inspired by her even though she is not actually here at the bench).  Tiny dolls, huge dolls, mini dolls, elegant dolls, animal dolls – all of them.  So little time, so many dolls to make.  Now the Open Studio weekend is done, I have begun to put my dolls on etsy. If you want one of my dolls you can go there, or you can make an appointment to come to my studio – of course I will be doing doll making classes (including fancy stitches for those interested) in the studio AND ON ZOOM.   Please register your interest on yogafirst2@bigpond.com.
Where does yoga fit in all of this?
Well – my meditations are longer, they have to be because I am paddling into unknown waters and my meditation will support me (nothing else will help you in the unknown).  The asanas? I am going to have to do more.  Always The Five Tibetans, every morning, but I admit to doing the speed version.  I will have to concentrate on the longer version, and more of them.  Morning and night.  I kidded myself that moving wood was an asana, and it could be if i took longer, but that also is a speed yoga.  So it’s back to the foundations for me.
Often when we are taking a new course we hope that we can leave the foundations for someone else to do – sorry – it doesn’t work like that.  First the foundations, then the build.    I will have to begin by thinking of things quite differently and begin to build some new foundations.  It is not a good idea to build on sand.
I can see where I think I am going, the vision.  New lighting etc physical STUFF, more time.  But I am not sure how I am going to get there or how long it is going to take.  This is where trust, faith and yoga come into it.  I think I will do the vision board I have been promising myself for some time – but now I actually have a vision, this board will be useful.

Dear Yogis,

I am still having trouble with my emails.  Please revert to yogafirst2@bigpond.com until further notice.  If you have sent to optus or bigpond in the the last 12 hours, could you repeat the email to yogafirst@netcon.net.au please.  Otherwise, it is lost to me…

Only a day to go before our Open Studio Saturday (between 2 and 4) same on Sunday, and the dolls on the “finishing table”  (to the right) are almost as excited as me!.  Thank you so much to those folk who have let me know they are coming – I am so looking forward to seeing you all.  This is the first Open Studio since before the Covid Lockdowns.  That does not mean that Covid is gone, it does mean that we are all immunised, and we may get covid, but it will be less severe (as long as you are taking care of your immunity with a reasonable diet and exercise).   That being said, if you have the sniffles, if you have any symptoms, please make a date with me to come to the studio at another time – there is no urgency – I am going nowhere, I will wait for you.

At the Open Day I will have the dolls of course, fabulous golden pendulums, and paintings

I make and mend dolls for children and people in crisis.  There are a number of ways you can work with me in this.

*Buy a doll and leave it with me and I will donate it to a child or an adult who needs a “compassionate companion”.
*Make a donation to my doll making efforts.
      *Donate fabrics.
*Source and donate hand made (not manufactured) dolls which need TLC.  I will clean and refurbish them and hand them on.
*OR BUY A BABY TO TAKE HOME AND LOVE.

The dolls I actually make, even the teeny weeny ones, will I hope, be heirlooms.   Manufactured dolls contain the most terrible rubbish, even ground up gravel which turns into dust (your children can suck and breathe in this dust).  Some contain sharp wires and armatures, terrible screws and fittings to hold in the eyes, and large plastic boxes containing batteries!  How these help a child love and cuddle a doll I don’t know, how they get past health inspections I don’t know, and why we buy them for children is also a mystery to me!

I do make my own dolls, from second hand refurbished, pre-loved material…. but they do take quite a long time as most of the work is hand-work.  The machine only used for the major seams.  I hand paint most of the faces.

Please pop in.  I will have champers as usual, and nibbles.  You will be able to see the finished dolls, and perhaps “like” a doll which is not quite finished yet.  I can post it to you or you could collect later.  LAY BYS ACCEPTED.

NAMASTE – JAHNE

Dear Yogis,

Only a few days to go to our OPEN STUDIO.  This is the first Open/OPEN studio since the Covid lockdown, however, if you feel better to wear a mask then I urge you to do so (and I have lots of spares to give away if you forget).  Hopefully as usual people will drift in, in ones and twos, and you will be able to distance and feel comfortable.  It is up to you.  I look forward to seeing you.  This Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4.  I will have some beautiful little dolls (and big ones).

MAKING AND MENDING.

I have been busy making and mending dolls ready to send them to children in crisis.  If you want to be involved, you can purchase a doll and take one with you (or i will post one to you) and that will support me in time and materials, or you can buy a doll and instead of taking it, you can leave it with me to be donated.

All sales will mean that I can make and mend many more dolls that I can donate. Unfortunately I am not independently wealthy, and am not supported by a wealthy, generous male, so I have to pay the usual expenses whilst doing what I can for others.  Selling my dolls,  teaching yoga, painting, darning and the other bits and pieces make my life interesting and make me independent.

It is amazing to me how dolls are made commercially.  The tiny doll to the left I have been told is probably vintage, but from the look of the stuffing I would doubt that.   It is also a beautiful little doll and any child would be pleased to play with it.  I have called her “TINY”.  She was falling to bits, and I have carefully restored her, so she will last for many years now.

“Modern” dolls are to be carefully examined please before you buy them for a child.  The terrible bit of machinery to the right is a pair of hard plastic screws behind a dolls eyes – they look like implements of torture invented by “Vlad the Impaler”, rather than a thing to give to a child.  Dolls that feel squishy are sometimes filled with crushed gravel chips in plastic bags (true, I could not make this up),  you can also find stiff velcro things, and pointy wires.   If you can find these bits of internal rubbish,  you can rest assured a child will.  Buy your dolls from church stalls or doll makers and make sure you are buying them for a child, and not for you – that is different altogether.  When I make a doll “sculpture” out of cloth I use armatures, but making a doll for a child is all about making something soft and cuddly.  A toy that will be loved (able to be washed without damage or the internals turning into cement) and handed down through the family.

MANIFESTING YOUR DESTINY
We had a fantastic teacher training session on Monday on this topic, which should be dear to the heart of everyone, not just teachers.

The usual students attended.  Unsurprisingly,  those who will willingly turn up for tarot or some-such stayed away.  Was it because in this discipline they had to take the responsibility for their future? They couldn’t leave it in the hands of someone else or fate? Once you understand this there is nowhere to hide.  The blame-game is ripped away.  We all have to understand that if  life is not panning out we really can’t blame others – we are just not understanding the process.  This process was laid out clearly step by step in this class.

Those who did come were models of how this meditation actually works, BIG TIME.  They had in the past and were in present time,  manifesting everything that they wanted in life. They had taken the steps. What we actually did was to examine the process happening in our lives, and how it was playing out today.  The steps we took, the meditations, the mind-set,  and  how this happened as we moved through it on a day to day basis.

These students as always,  were an inspiration to me.  I am sorry you didn’t think it applied to you.  I chose the topic because in this time of seeming uncertainty, we all need to be reminded of how the game unfolds.
