Dear Yogis,

Just in case you were confused….Today, Wednesday the 14th at 1pm is our last yoga class day before Christmas.  Although I enjoy time to catch up on paperwork, and do all the necessary things before we start again on the 9th January – I will miss you.  Especially this year as I have determined NOT to have the usual open day on Christmas Day, although you are welcome to drop in on your way to somewhere else.  If the weather is good I will be in the garden, if not I will be studying or sewing.

“PURSE’Y” – A SMALL BAG.

I will be at Mt.Macedon Gallery this coming Sunday morning if you want to pop in and say HI.  I am taking in to be displayed and sold,  a handbag I finished last night.  I made it out of pair of Child’s jeans,  with handles and lining from and adult bag.

It is a slouchy, pouch sort of bag, and very comfortable over the shoulder with patent handles.. It holds all my things, papers, purses, phone, money purse with lots of room left over.  It has lots of internal and external pockets, which is why I love “jean bags”..  If you have a favourite pair of jeans (especially with a good logo) I can make them into a bag for you.  If you also have a bag that has worn out I can put the two together.  The internals and handles from your bag, and the outer made from your jeans!!!  Result, a special bag designed with you in mind.

Dear Yogis,

This is our last week of classes before Christmas, then we have our last lunch on Monday the 19th December at 1pm at The Victoria Hotel in Woodend.

Out foraging at Christmas time (Like Angel, I am saving to mend the roof, although I have a whole lot less roof than she has…..!), it is the Christmas smell of conifers that bring back memories for me.  Mum used to cut pine tree branches to decorate the house (keeping in mind we had to travel a long way to get anywhere near a pine tree), and then make lots of other goodies with pine needles on the basis that nothing could be wasted.  Christmas trees and their lovely aroma are the heart of Christmas. No synthetics in our house.  I don’t do this now that there are no children in the house.  I wonder if Dick and Angel would go bonkers and over-the-top for Christmas if they didn’t have a hospitality business, and the children were not at home?  I do conifer cooking, but I do this ALL YEAR.

There is conifer tea, pine needle infused honey, pine needle cough medicine, conifer cookies, pine needle vodka, then there are the infused oils and balms and body butters.  Make sure that you use the correct pine needles.  Traditional pine trees with long spiky needles.

Around here the needles are the varieties that are grouped in 3’s and 5’s.  These are OK – threes are in the photo to the left.  No spruce or yews please.  Google if you are not sure.  During Covid I encouraged you all to go out and collect and gave a lot of details, even collected needles in bulk to send to herb distributors.  I am sure around your place and in open spaces you will find these pine trees and you can bring the Christmas smells and tastes into your house.

ROOM FOR YOU

Anthony Hopkins is a  reasonable “philosopher” as well as an amazing actor.  He has quite a lot to say about relationships – this is the time of the year you might like to revisit your relationships and decide where you want to spend your energy.  Here’s a sample, a snippet,  of words he has written on this topic…..

“….The most valuable thing you have in your life is your time and energy as both are limited.
The people and things you give your time and energy to, will define your existence.
When you realize this you start to understand why you’re so anxious when you spend time with people, activities or spaces that don’t suit you and shouldn’t be near you.
You’ll start to realize that the most important thing you can do for yourself and everyone around you, is to protect your energy more fiercely than anything else.
Make your life a safe haven, in which only people “compatible” with you are allowed”

Dear Yogis,

Windarring calls.  What a fabulous place to work – I love it and am having so much fun.  Would you like to work in disability?  Few are thinking about it BUT MAYBE YOU SHOULD.

At a time when yoga teachers are looking around for the best place to teach, and dealing with dwindling class numbers,  there is an area which growing in leaps and bounds – disability.  All areas of disability, especially if you have NDIS recognition.  You can join me in the journey – please register your interest at yogafirst2@bigpond.com.  Even if you don’t want to be registered with the NDIS, you can still work in this area. For instance “YOGA FOR WHEELIES AND WHEELCHAIRS… “ could be popular where you live.   Or, if you already work in the area of disability and would like to teach yoga to your clients the way that I do, then you could do this course.

THE MINISTRY OF YOGA – INDIA

Of course, in India which is aware and enthusiastic about the benefits of yoga for everyone, Wheelchair yoga for people with spinal injuries is gaining in popularity.

“Yoga combines meditation, breath control, and body postures in order to aid mobility and body awareness. It is a practice that combines elements of physical fitness, mental awareness and spiritual awakening,” said Pragya Ghildial, senior yoga therapist, ISIC.  Ghidhiyal, the first female yoga therapist herself confined to a wheelchair, is a peer counsellor and an athlete who has represented India in international Para athletics. She is also the recipient of the National Award 2016 for best sports person with disability in the women’s category.

“I personally believe specially-abled persons or people having undergone debilitating injuries or body paralysis should have equal opportunity and access to do yoga. As a matter of fact, wheelchair yoga is technically not different at all from any other form of yoga, rather it only refers to a set of poses you can do while being seated,” she says

As the ancient texts say, the only thing that stops people from doing yoga, is their ability to understand and follow the teacher.  Wheelchair Yoga for athletes, and for those with brain injuries are vastly different, but still yoga.  We can still teach these groups and the benefits are enormous.  Join me.
