Dear Yogis,

Our time of rest is nearly over.. Yoga and herbal zoom both start on Monday coming up – and I am so pleased, I have missed you.

As usual I have only just gotten used to this lovely time.  It’s the same when I go on any holiday, I am just getting into the routine when it finished.  Come to think of it it happened when I used to go car hunting with my ex.  He was turning off the cars and looking for the next one,  when I was just getting interested, but I digress.

Yesterday my power tripped at 11pm on the previous evening and I didn’t have it turned on until 11am the following (yesterday) morning.  It was marginally dark and quite cold and I wasn’t sure when the sparkie would turn up, so in the meantime I wrote the words to the Magdalen oracle.  Remember I did the paintings about a year ago, but wasn’t inspired with the words – well It is nearly finished thanks to the outage.  I wrote 18 pages!

When you are thinking of plants and herbs, think of this lovely flower.

One day around 32,000 years ago, an arctic ground squirrel ate parts of a plant, silene stenophylla, including its seed.

The squirrel was digesting it when its life ended.   Its body was recovered from permafrost and examined. Scientists germinated this plant seed. This silene stenophylla just bloomed. It is 32,000 years old. The strength, the vitality and stamina of living things — of life itself — is incredible.

Dear Yogis,

(THE AGE YESTERDAY) . ” There are no flags at half-mast, for the approximately 15,000 lives lost in 2022 (compared with just over 2000 in the previous two years), no national day of mourning, little empathising at the deep daily impact COVID-19 has had on millions of more “vulnerable” Australians, little concern over what chronic COVID-19 disease might do and is doing to the wider population.

Since the election, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his advisers have simply said COVID-19 is no longer exceptional and should be treated like other respiratory infections. But a conservative estimate is that 500,000 Australians will suffer from long COVID, for which there is no specific treatment. A still uncertain yet clearly major chronic disease burden will cause severe hospital and healthcare disruption and have an impact on the workforce and school attendance. The gulf between COVID reality and the narrative from our leaders could hardly be wider”.

Are we consigned to acceptance of this toll, to living with COVID and all its consequences no matter what? We hope not. It doesn’t need to be this way.

YOGA AND COVID.  I was listening to Radio National the Stage Show this afternoon and listening to an opera singer who had recovered from covid and a blood clot on the lung.  Normally this would be enough to spell DEATH, but for an opera singer, the breath is everything.  When she got out of hospital she embarked on a program of SIMPLE lung exercises that she learned when she was beginning her career.  Result?  Good health, overcoming all odds, and lungs healthy enough for her to take up her career where she left off.. singing lead roles in large operas.

What can you do?  Get a good teacher, and learn the breath exercises she learned (maybe from me?), and strengthen/heal your lungs.

Jesse, my son, was born with hypermobility,  but by the time he was born doctors recognised the condition, and how it effects the lungs.  Jesse has always had weak lungs and took it to himself to strengthen them in rather the same way that the opera singer mentioned above did, and became a passionate deep diver – the kind who dives as deep as possible on one breath (250ft!).

You may not be a diver, or an opera singer, but you may be in recovery from covid and  want to increase your lung capacity.  As the opera singer said “it takes time and patience”. How about you start with a yoga class, we are all about the breath.

Dear Yogis,

Happy New year to you all.  In spite of the fact it was Melbourne’s biggest, it slid right past me.  I didn’t even have a glass of champers with the cat.

I did go to The Mill at Castlemaine on Sunday (yesterday).  That was fantastic.  I especially loved the Asian section and would have purchased a Japanese slatted screen, but someone had gotten in first.  On the way home stopped at The Stables in Malmsbury.  It was beautiful on the shaded deck overlooking the Malmsbury Gardens and lake.  I had afternoon tea, but they do make fantastic wood fired pizzas for those with hefty appetites.

Soon, I am going to take myself to Daylesford Mill which I am told is even bigger than Castlemaine Mill.

When I do go, I will stop at The Convent Gallery for tea.

Tina has done such a wonderful restoration.  I remember all those years ago when she was given a few rooms to use as a pottery space – it all sprang from that.  Even the rooms she started with were crumbling.  If you have a vision it can carry you along, just as it has for her.  It was a BIG, BIG, vision – Few of us dream that big or have the patience and strength to go the distance.  She hasn’t I think written the book, but it would be a good one.

I think Daylesford encourages those visions – take another power couple, Alla and Allan Wolf-Tasker at “The Lake House”.

I even remember when they started and were in the first stages of building.  Who knew from those humble beginnings it would become the icon it has?  Years have passed, and we are all STILL HERE doing what we love to do.

Our YOGA CLASSES start on the 9th January.

Monday Hatha, Wed. Restorative and Friday Hatha/Restorative 1pm and 2.15 each day.  I am also thinking of a Saturday morning class.
