Blog Student News Trainees/Teacher News

Dear Yogis,

Only one bit of news that is taking up my mind this week – I have an EXHIBITION opening happening this week (Saturday September 7th) at 2pm at The Mt.Macedon Gallery.  Please pop in at 2 (or up to closing time –  at 4pm) – down the lane beside the General Store called  “The Trading Post” and next door to Dicksonian Rare Plant Nursery.   I will be there to chat about the artwork, or about a portrait for you, (or yoga).  I would love to see you.  I was trying to think how many exhibitions I have had here and around the world, and it has to be 100 (or more) considering I have been formally exhibiting since 1976 when I had my first exhibition at Monash University.  Considering how long I have been exhibiting it is amazing how few painting I have in my stock room (shelf) – Because we live in straightened times, and there is not much money around for either yoga or art, I have manicured my prices accordingly.  You can get a piece of artwork for $120 (one third of which goes to the gallery and the art group to enable it to keep operating – paying rent and services).

I am especially enjoying the medium I am using now, and will get larger and larger works completed as I master the technique.  Old fashioned photo/print/drawing transfer using paper, glue (mess) – definitely no modern gello which doesn’t give the depth, the handworked look and feel – then I overpaint, or draw, and then multiple layers of encausting wax, put on, dabbed off, until I get the right, aged look.  When I am happy I do more painting, more gilding.

NEXT STUDIO TEACHER TRAINING – The last Sunday in September

YOGA MONTHLY LUNCH: last Saturday in September, 12 noon at Full Moon Cafe next to the Vic in Woodend. .  Please email me if you would like to come, and haven’t emailed or contacted me already..

MT.MACEDON GALLERY EXHIBITION:  Meet the artist (ME) at the gallery – Saturday 7th September, at 2pm.

NAMASTE – JAHNE (An unusual Artist)

Dear Yogis..

Thanks for those who came to the luncheon, it was heaps of fun and Katie and I were the last to leave at 2.45!  I had the salmon “Poke Bowl” and it was beautiful as usual.

COLD SHOWERS

I have become a passionate aficionado and a bit boring about the benefit of cold showers in the morning.  Not just “run in/run out” but at least 2 minutes on the feet, then 4 mins on the legs, then 3 minutes on the back and I am working on going forward – 10 minutes all over, cold, full on water.

If you want to see someone who can really do this (and my inspiration as well as Wim Hoff) then look at the youtube video of Joanna Nordblad.  She free dives under the ice, in the beginning to distract herself from pain at a time when she contemplated suicide.  When I first started I thought “Why am I doing this” now I know.  I am sharper, clearer, have more energy, and I am looking forward to teaching yoga for the next… (maybe 20 or so) years.  I attribute this solely to the cold in the morning.  At a time when some older students are wanting to slow down, go easy, I am looking for more physical challenges, more yoga classes.

When I speak to my students about this discipline, they shy away with all sorts of excuses – even if they have multiple physical and mental difficulties.  They won’t even try.

For me, it is my insurance policy.  No brain fog, no aches and pains, loving yoga. Excited for life.   Who wouldn’t do this simple thing.    I can’t understand that people won’t even give it a go for a couple of months.  Not just a dribble of cold, but a full on shower, hard and strong.  It seems even our students,  would face hundreds of dollars in doctors fees, the inconvenience, the possible “slicing and dicing”, because they are afraid of the cold – as Joanna says “there is no place for fear”.

There is no guarantee of life everlasting, however, you will feel fabulous to the end, whatever that may mean to you..

PESTO

Yesterday I made a fabulous “sticky weed (cleavers), foraged greens and parsley pesto” and a “one egg mayo” which I have finally got the hang of.  I must be feeling domestic.  Actually it is light relief after the gallery in the morning (and anticipating Monday morning meet-up too), and catching up with new yoga class timetable (see below)

I have always organised to reach you lovely lot with new classes first, but now I am reaching further afield.

Dear Yogis,

STOCK ROOM DISCOVERY.  I have nearly finished all the admin and bits and pieces one needs to do for an exhibition, and it opens with a meet the artist at 2pm  The Mt.Macedon Gallery.

This exhibition is to clear my mind for my new work, and you can be the winner too.

I am letting my body of work in encaustic/photo transfers leave me for amazingly low prices.  Now you can have one for yourself.  I know I shouldn’t, but I am.  “PORTRAITS, PETS AND POTS” are the subject matter.  You can commission a portrait of course. However – I am already in my mind moving into new ground……  Every painting I sell brings me closer to to my new minds work.

I have been experimenting with what you may think is depressing work – Death Masks and JIZO.    Because I have lost children I am also interested in commemorating their passing with an installation in the garden which I will invite you to participate in, paintings and statues will accompany this.  Usually, a traditional Japanese Buddhist statue accompanies a JIZO ceremony – meaning “water child memorial service”.  This is a Japanese Buddhist ceremony for those who have had a miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion (or “lost” to you – forced adoption for instance)..  I think it is important, you may too.

I am sure you have explored the Japanese memorial wall in ZOJO JI in Tokyo.  I don’t have a wall – but I do have a TREE.  If you want to speak to me about your loved one who has passed, we can do a zoom, or you can come speak to me on Saturday the 7th at 2pm,  or you can email me.  Whichever you choose, it is a big step I know, and I will honour that.

Sitting in the center of our lives, giving ourselves to body and breath, letting go beyond knowledge or knowing,
we find a steadfast and fierce confidence to not turn away from the One Heart of the world.
