Dear Yogis,

(THE AGE YESTERDAY) . ” There are no flags at half-mast, for the approximately 15,000 lives lost in 2022 (compared with just over 2000 in the previous two years), no national day of mourning, little empathising at the deep daily impact COVID-19 has had on millions of more “vulnerable” Australians, little concern over what chronic COVID-19 disease might do and is doing to the wider population.

Since the election, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his advisers have simply said COVID-19 is no longer exceptional and should be treated like other respiratory infections. But a conservative estimate is that 500,000 Australians will suffer from long COVID, for which there is no specific treatment. A still uncertain yet clearly major chronic disease burden will cause severe hospital and healthcare disruption and have an impact on the workforce and school attendance. The gulf between COVID reality and the narrative from our leaders could hardly be wider”.

Are we consigned to acceptance of this toll, to living with COVID and all its consequences no matter what? We hope not. It doesn’t need to be this way.

YOGA AND COVID.  I was listening to Radio National the Stage Show this afternoon and listening to an opera singer who had recovered from covid and a blood clot on the lung.  Normally this would be enough to spell DEATH, but for an opera singer, the breath is everything.  When she got out of hospital she embarked on a program of SIMPLE lung exercises that she learned when she was beginning her career.  Result?  Good health, overcoming all odds, and lungs healthy enough for her to take up her career where she left off.. singing lead roles in large operas.

What can you do?  Get a good teacher, and learn the breath exercises she learned (maybe from me?), and strengthen/heal your lungs.

Jesse, my son, was born with hypermobility,  but by the time he was born doctors recognised the condition, and how it effects the lungs.  Jesse has always had weak lungs and took it to himself to strengthen them in rather the same way that the opera singer mentioned above did, and became a passionate deep diver – the kind who dives as deep as possible on one breath (250ft!).

You may not be a diver, or an opera singer, but you may be in recovery from covid and  want to increase your lung capacity.  As the opera singer said “it takes time and patience”. How about you start with a yoga class, we are all about the breath.

Dear Yogis,

Happy New year to you all.  In spite of the fact it was Melbourne’s biggest, it slid right past me.  I didn’t even have a glass of champers with the cat.

I did go to The Mill at Castlemaine on Sunday (yesterday).  That was fantastic.  I especially loved the Asian section and would have purchased a Japanese slatted screen, but someone had gotten in first.  On the way home stopped at The Stables in Malmsbury.  It was beautiful on the shaded deck overlooking the Malmsbury Gardens and lake.  I had afternoon tea, but they do make fantastic wood fired pizzas for those with hefty appetites.

Soon, I am going to take myself to Daylesford Mill which I am told is even bigger than Castlemaine Mill.

When I do go, I will stop at The Convent Gallery for tea.

Tina has done such a wonderful restoration.  I remember all those years ago when she was given a few rooms to use as a pottery space – it all sprang from that.  Even the rooms she started with were crumbling.  If you have a vision it can carry you along, just as it has for her.  It was a BIG, BIG, vision – Few of us dream that big or have the patience and strength to go the distance.  She hasn’t I think written the book, but it would be a good one.

I think Daylesford encourages those visions – take another power couple, Alla and Allan Wolf-Tasker at “The Lake House”.

I even remember when they started and were in the first stages of building.  Who knew from those humble beginnings it would become the icon it has?  Years have passed, and we are all STILL HERE doing what we love to do.

Dear Yogis,

Did you read Wednesdays newsletter which focussed on THE HERMIT/Our YOGA CLASSES start on the 9th January.

MY CARD FOR TODAY – ACE OF SWORDS, arrived after I asked what would be the work that most suited me for this time in my life?  The answer came right away in the form of the card I chose.  The Ace of Swords.  What did this card represent for me? It screamed out at me from the deck……WORK FROM HOME!!!!   Don’t let the ego get in the way and goals I can achieve quickly at this time are better than long range ones.

Choosing the Ace of Swords represents the kind of mental strength needed to work from home successfully. Working from home has its pros and cons but overall gives you a greater sense of freedom. I love it.  Remote work requires more personal discipline and focus but is well worth the effort.  I have worked from home for most of my life, and when I stray not only does it COST me money, it ends up making me stressed (something I shy away from).  I like to live a tranquil life.

THE ACE OF SWORDS:  The image on the card depicts a wind blowing through the trees, shaking the leaves as it passes. It denotes a fresh new thought or idea, resulting in an aha! moment. It depicts a period marked by new ideas and provides light on a new way of life. The sword is raised, and you are anxious to put it to the test and discover just how sharp its edge is.

I really like the messages of THE ACES in the Rider Waite Deck.  The Ace of Swords is the finest expression of its suit, as are all of the Aces. It represents mental clarity and breakthroughs. It indicates a high element of concentration, drive, and intellectual ability in connection to your personality or the activity you perform. It may represent transformation via internal forces, leading to new beginnings. This does not necessarily mean a new occupation, but a “sharper edge” on something that you may be used to doing.  Chopping away those things that no longer work, concentrating on those things that do.

We notice protruding and dipping hills in the backdrop of the Ace of Swords, which are blue and purple in hue. A cloud in the foreground protrudes an arm and a hand clutching a sword. This is no ordinary sword: a crown adorns the sword’s very points, and different plants and foliage hang from the crown. This sword is a formidable weapon, capable of chopping, cleaving, and exposing all.

The sword piercing the crown signifies your awakening intellect and your awareness that difficulties must be overcome. It’s now much simpler to think and see clearly. You may need a safe place to vent and someone to speak to. If you can’t locate someone you can trust right away, you may be inclined to write out your emotions.  You perhaps may have a Group or Forum you can talk to.

The swords suite as a whole symbolizes mental strength, while the Ace of Swords represents the exact center of mental force. Intelligence, wit, cunning, and deductive thinking are all examples of this ability. Most importantly, remember that we all can seek this intellectual capacity – we just have to pursue it relentlessly if we want to achieve it.

Have you discovered that the Best Ideas Come When You Aren’t Thinking?

The notion of skill is also important to the sword’s suit since it is hard information that can only be acquired through time and effort. This card may be advising you to seek or revisit a talent or a certain kind of academic understanding to achieve pleasure and harmony in your life.

Finally, this Ace of Swords may be requesting the truth from you — and not necessarily the happily-ever-after truth. The majority of truth is difficult to accept because it is sharp, cutting, and may be used as a weapon against others, much like a sword. The truth, like a sword, may sever our ties and set us free. As it is said in the Qur’an  “If you seek comfort you may never find truth, and if you seek truth you will never find comfort”.

Consider the following questions when you encounter the Ace of Swords. What does mental strength mean to you? How do you use intellect, wit, cunning, and logical thinking in your daily life? Have you lately used these characteristics against others, or has someone else used them against you? Can you perceive both the good and bad aspects of these characteristics? What steps can you take to incorporate good elements into your life?

What Ace of Swords Means for You Today

The Ace of Swords has appeared to show you that a new perspective or some kind of sudden realization is likely today. This can come to you as an ‘aha’ moment where your subconscious feeds you the answer to something after you have quit thinking about it. This sudden stroke of genius often feels exciting and empowering but can also be the first stage that leads to over-thinking. Thoughts are useful only when they are under our conscious control, so don’t let this influx of energy get out of control. Meditation can help if you find your mind is racing today.

SEE YOU ON THE MAT (I am already missing you all).

NAMASTE – JAHNE
